Road cycling Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages:

(Exercise)
The physical exercise gained from cycling is generally linked with increased health and well-being. According to the World Health Organization, physical inactivity is second only to tobacco smoking as a health risk in developed countries, and this is associated with many tens of billions of dollars of healthcare costs. The WHO's report suggests that increasing physical activity is a public health 'best buy', and that cycling is a 'highly suitable activity' for this purpose. The

Disadvantages:

( Injuries)
Cycling suffers from a perception that it is unsafe although use of appropriate safety equipment and observance of road rules can reduce risk of serious injury. In the UK, fatality rates per mile or kilo meter are slightly less than those for walking. In the US, bicycling fatality rates are less than 2/3 of those walking the same distance. The fatality and serious injury rates per hour of travel are just over double for cycling than for walking (owing to the reduced travel time), in the UK.A Danish study in 2000 concluded that "bicycling to work decreased risk of mortality in approximately 40% after multivariate adjustment, including leisure time physical activity”. Injuries (to cyclists, from cycling) can be divided into two types:
  1.  Physical trauma (extrinsic)
  2.  Overuse (intrinsic).
Acute physical trauma includes injuries to the head and extremities resulting from falls and collisions. Since a large percentage of the collisions between motor and pedal vehicles occur at night, bicycle lighting is required for safety when bicycling at night.
The most common cycling overuse injury occurs in the knees, affecting cyclists at all levels. These are caused by many factors: Incorrect bicycle fit or adjustment, particularly the saddle.
  • Incorrect adjustment of clip less pedals.
  •  Too many hills, or too many miles, too early in the training season.
  •  Poor training preparation for long touring rides.
  •  Selecting too high a gear. A lower gear for uphill climb protects the knees, even though your muscles are well able to handle a higher gear.
( Exposure to air pollution)
One concern often expressed (both by non-cyclists and some cyclists) is the thought that riding in traffic exposes the cyclist to higher levels of air pollution, especially if he or she travels on or along busy roads. Some authors have claimed this to be untrue, showing that the pollutant and irritant count within cars is consistently higher, (presumably because of limited circulation of air within the car and due to the air intake being directly in the stream of other traffic).

Cycling Road started in late 19th century and debuted in 1896 Olympic in Athens. Road Cycling is governed by Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). 2012 Olympic will witness Road Cycling being competed from 28th july to 1st August at The Mall, Hampton Court where 212 (145 men, 67 women) athletes are participating.

Road cycling History

The dandy horse was the first human means of transport to use only two wheels in tandem and was invented by the German Baron Karl von Drais. the modern bicycle was introduced by Drais to the public in Mannheimin summer 1817. Its rider sat astride a wooden frame supported by two in-line wheels and pushed the vehicle along with his/her feet while steering the front wheel.

The first propelled 2-wheel vehicle may have been built by Kirkpatrick MacMillan, a Scottish blacksmith, in 1839, although the claim is open to dispute. He is also associated with the first recorded instance of a cycling traffic offence, when a Glasgow newspaper reported in 1842 an accident in which an anonymous "gentleman from Dumfries-shire... bestride a velocipede... of ingenious design" knocked over a little girl in Glasgow and was fined five shillings.

Introduction of racing and bicycle.

The first cycling race was a 1,200 meter race on May 31, 1868 at the Park of Saint-Cloud, Paris. It was won by James Moore who rode a bicycle with solid rubber tires. The first cycle race covering a distance between two cities was Paris–Rouen, also won by James Moore, who rode the 123 kilometers dividing both cities in 10 hours and 40 minutes.
The longest established bicycle racing club in the United States is the Century Road Club of America. Incorporated 1891 in Missourian now New Jersey. The club has sponsored races and timed distance events since its inception. Its members have included more national and Olympic medal holders than any other American club including Fred Spencer and John Howard.

A bicycle, also known as a bike, pushbike,[ pedal bike pedal cycle, or cycle, is a human-powered, pedal-driven, single-track vehicle, having two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other. A person who rides a bicycle is called a bicyclist.
Bicycles were introduced in the 19th century and now number about one billion worldwide, twice as many as automobiles. They are the principal means of transportation in many regions.
